How to Shut Off Your Water Fast
First thing — shut the water off. I do not care if it is 2 in the morning or the middle of a holiday weekend. Every minute that water is running is another minute it is soaking into your floors, walls, and framing. Here is exactly how to do it.
Find Your Main Water Shutoff Valve
In most homes the main shutoff valve is located where the water line enters the house — typically in the basement, crawl space, utility room, or near the water heater. In warmer climates it may be outside near the foundation or at the street.
Turn the Valve Clockwise to Close
For a traditional gate valve, turn the handle clockwise (right) until it stops. For a ball valve with a lever handle, turn the lever 90 degrees so it is perpendicular to the pipe. This stops all water flow into the home.
Open a Faucet to Release Pressure
After shutting off the main valve, open a faucet on the lowest level of your home to release any remaining water pressure in the lines. This reduces the risk of additional water escaping from the damaged area.
Call a Licensed Plumber Immediately
Once the water is off, call a licensed plumber right away. Do not attempt to repair burst pipes, failed supply lines, or sewage backups yourself — improper repairs can make the situation significantly worse.
